The newly installed hybrid power supply system has been researched since the fiscal year of 2009. The participants include Nippon Yusen, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Monohakobi Institute of Technology (MTI), Japan Classification Society, and received funding from various government agencies in Japan. . Early tests showed that the photovoltaic panels on the “Auriga Leader†could not supply stable power due to the large amount of light in the weather.
The new hybrid system "Auriga Leader" will stabilize the entire ship's power system supply to minimize the use of diesel generators, and hope to ensure power stability by mixing solar and hybrid power even in harsh sea conditions. It is understood that Nippon Yusen and MTI will consider developing a larger marine solar power generation system based on the test results. Kawasaki Heavy Industries also sought to commercialize marine hybrid systems.
